To provide a stimulating, rewarding, and stable environment for adults with developmental disabilities in a richly rewarding and compassionate setting that encourages life-long learning and growth.

Founded on Compassion

In January, 1947, The Cuyahoga Council for the Retarded Child, with the cooperation of the Euclid Board of Education, the City of Euclid, and the Euclid Kiwanis Club, opened the Euclid Opportunity School. Due to the interest shown by the public, the Euclid Council for the Retarded Child was founded in 1950 and was incorporated in 1953.

 

From the beginning, Mrs. Elizabeth Williams, who was passionate about educating people with developmental disabilities, met with students in a small white cottage of the Euclid Health Center on Lakeshore Boulevard; however, space was limited. The Board of Trustees saw the need for a larger building, but had limited funds. The Board approached a local builder, Frank Mavec, who constructed a new building with his own money. The school was named after his mother, Mary Mavec.

 

The Mary Mavec Opportunity School on Lakeshore Boulevard and East 222nd Street was dedicated on December 1, 1953. In 2007, the school moved to its present location at 21701 Lakeshore Boulevard.

 

Today, in downtown Euclid, Ohio Mary Mavec Opportunity School carries on the passion of its founders by welcoming adults with developmental disabilities in a supportive, compassionate, and stimulating setting.

 

For over 70 years our program has helped people with special needs grow strong and reach their potential.

 

Funding

Mary Mavec Opportunity School is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation. It is funded through the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities, tuition, and private tax deductible contributions.
